Project Highlight - Theatre Calgary
The Scope
In the heart of downtown Calgary, Alberta, lies the historic Theatre Calgary. The theatre is attended by countless people every year, and is a frontrunner in providing innovative, engaging, and soulful theatrical content. When the Technical Director of Theatre Calgary contacted Evolution AV through an industry reference, the requirements of the organization were made clear. They wanted a large format LED screen to be used as the backdrop for their latest rendition of “A Christmas Carol”. Whatever was installed needed to be low pitch and dependable, and with the intention of the technology handling their productions for the next 5 to 10 years, the solution needed to be easy to maintain.
The Installation
Throughout the installation, Evolution AV worked closely with Theatre Calgary. Due to the size of the design, extra attention was needed to specify rigging and power requirements, as well as installation logistics. A total of 416 High-Pitch LED Panels were required to create the 40-foot-wall video wall and it was imperative that every single one of the 6,815,744 LED pixels functioned perfectly. Another unique aspect of this installation came in the form of spare backup panels that were required to be swapped quickly on site, ensuring the functionality of the video wall would always remain intact. When combined with the seamless capabilities of their centralized system, these panels allowed for complete backdrop setting changes with just one push of a button.

The Result
2020 presented new challenges for the live event industry that sadly resulted in countless performances being placed on hold, This, however, did not stop Theatre Calgary from moving forward with their immensely popular production of The Christmas Carol. This first ever digital performance was enhanced by the dynamic capabilities of their high-definition backdrop, and although different from what audiences had been used to in the past, Theatre Calgary’s 2020 performance created a memorable experience for its viewers, wherever they may have been.
