Brookfield Residential YMCA, located in the community of Seton, is the largest YMCA in Canada. The 330,000 sq. ft. facility provides spaces for leisure and learning through both recreation and competitive aquatics, fitness and sports facilities, arts and performance areas, and a full-scale Calgary Public Library. Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton partnered with Evolution AV Calgary to design and integrate a modern, state of the art AV system throughout the building.
The Aquatic Center
The aquatic center located in the YMCA at Seton is one impressive space. With a design that supports swimmers of all ages, skillsets and intentions, the area features all the amenities one could ask for from a recreation facility. In addition to the 50-metre pool, designed to meet international competition standards, the aquatic center includes a diving tower, lazy river play structure, two water slides, Flowrider, and multiple spa-oriented features, such as a steam room and hot tubs. Of course, only the highest quality technology would complement such an environment, which is why such a diverse list of technology was included in the design.
One of the most significant AV components, the sound system, consists of multiple Community loudspeakers and Oceanears underwater speakers. Oceanears speakers are a great audio solution for a wide range of aquatic needs, from U.S. Navy Approved Diver Signaling Devices and Diver Recall Systems. In the YMCA at Seton, Oceanears speakers are used in supporting synchronized swimming. They dangle underneath the water and project soundwaves, making it easier for the swimmers to stay in unison.
In addition to the various types of speakers within the aquatic centre, a Biamp Audiaflex paging system was installed, providing staff with the ability to page the entire area on command. Finally, a Crestron wall-mounted control panel was integrated to round out the solution, providing complete, centralized control.
The Gymnasium
The three regulation-sized gymnasiums, purposed for basketball, volleyball, badminton and pickleball, feature a scoreboard and a complex audio solution. Consisting of multiple 15" 2-way Community loudspeakers powered by four 400W AVL Lab Gruppen amplifiers, each gym has a system powerful enough to support any sporting activity. Similar to the aquatic centre, they also each feature their own 7" Crestron wall panel for intuitive control and automation of each space.
The Theatre
The 250-seat multi-functional performance and rehearsal space has a design that accommodates various possible layouts and is used for music and dance recitals, theatre productions, events and conferences, and YMCA Children and Adult Programs.
Found within the theatre is an array of Tannoy loudspeakers, subwoofers, ceiling speakers, and concentric speakers, powered by AVL Lab Gruppen and Soundcraft amplifiers. A high-quality sound system is essential in an environment that hosts performances, and the Seton theatre certainly has the right technology to enhance any style of production or event. The space also features visual components and includes four 32" NEC LCD displays within the viewing area. These high-quality monitors extend whatever performance is taking place beyond the theatre's walls and allow viewers outside to observe.
