Project Highlight - MONOVA: Museum of North Vancouver Archives
MONOVA: Museum of North Vancouver & Archives has recently opened a brand-new facility in the iconic Shipyards District of North Vancouver. The collection includes over 9,000 artifacts related to the area, including the historic Streetcar 153 and an indigenous welcome circle dedicated to showcasing Squamish artifacts. Their collection also contains shipbuilding artifacts, pieces related to residential schools and other Canadian historical items. MONOVA brings a modern flair to the typical museum experience, featuring multiple audiovisual experiences, meeting rooms, presentation spaces and interactive exhibits.
The Tapestry Room
After proceeding past Streetcar 153 in the main hall of MONOVA. Guests enter a room filled with hanging tapestries and photographs of the North Vancouver/Squamish area. The room provides a wealth of information about the history of the area.
Bringing history and the modern world together is a 6000 lumen projector from NEC, displaying imagery on the north wall. This transforms the room into a multi-function space, as the projection screen is large enough to be viewed anywhere in the room while remaining unobtrusive to the rest of the room’s art.

Main Display Area
Inside the main display area, the museum boasts a substantial number of artifacts, information and historical photographs. There are multiple audiovisual elements to the space, bringing interactivity and engagement to the space. Evolution AV installed 5” full range loudspeakers from Tannoy throughout the room. Tucked discreetly into the ceiling rafters, these speakers distribute clear audio equally throughout the display room, without taking up space or drawing any attention. The audio system is powered by Lab Gruppen dual channel amplifiers, with a Biamp Tesiraforte DSP serving as the primary audio distribution hub.
The Boardroom/Meeting Room
Museum operations are a complex manner, and MONOVA required a meeting room space that allowed them to communicate effectively with their second location in Lynn Canyon, as well as clients and contractors. The solution provided by Evolution AV was a three-piece video conferencing kit.
For audio and video inputs, we used a Poly Studio Series video sound bar. This unit combines video, microphones and speaker systems into one unit for ease of use and a modern feel for the boardroom. The model that we’ve specified produces up to 4K 60FPS video quality, a beamforming microphone that ensures everyone can be heard equally in the room, and a powerful room-filling speaker system.
The primary display in the boardroom is a 4K Bravia Professional model from Sony. The display is positioned so that everyone at the boardroom table can participate and view the video conference from an ideal angle. The Poly sound bar is placed on top of this display so that the camera has an adequate viewing angle, as well as giving the microphone an ideal pickup range for each person to speak in the conference.
To control the system, a Poly tabletop touch panel is placed on the boardroom table in front of the display. This allows the user to select whether the purpose of the meeting is for a presentation or a conference, and also allows the user to join the meeting using their own laptop or tablet, or use the built-in hardware inside the meeting room. The system is compatible with most popular video conferencing platforms, making it perfect for communicating across organizations.
The Presentation Space
MONOVA is a space for gatherings, be it for employees, or members of the community. A large-scale presentation/meeting room space is available inside the museum for larger groups of people to meet.
Hanging from the ceiling is an NEC 6500 lumen laser projector. Laser projection technology is ideal for a space like this, as the unit is very high up in the ceiling. Laser projectors require very little maintenance, so it won’t prove to be necessary to access the projector at regular intervals in the future.
On the wall is a Crestron 7” touch panel. This panel is used to control all aspects of the presentation system. From this panel, employees can reveal the projection screen by lowering it from the ceiling, turn the projector unit on and off, choose an input source, and control volume/lighting.
Inside the ceiling, the 5” Tannoy loudspeakers make a return, carefully positioned inside the ceiling to be discreet, yet powerful enough for the space. Directly next to the control panel is an in-wall input panel that allows users to connect a laptop or tablet via HDMI, and establish an ethernet connection.
MONOVA: Museum of North Vancouver and Archives is a testament to “past meets present”. The presentation of history by using audio visual means to enhance the information is an example of how AV technology is of huge benefit to all types of businesses and spaces.
Evolution AV is proud to have partnered with MONOVA on this project. For those seeking to experience the museum for themselves: MONOVA officially opened to visitors on December 4th, 2021. For information and tickets, click here
