Project Highlight - Movati Athletic Club
Movati Athletic is known for its resort-like facilities, state-of-the-art equipment and impressive range of group fitness options. It is the importance they place on signature offerings that sets them apart from other similar establishments, and with amenities like dedicated cross-training spaces and women-only pools located in almost every location, it is no surprise that Movati is one of Canada's fastest-growing fitness clubs.
Since 1997, Movati has established itself throughout Ontario and now has seventeen locations across the province. In 2020, the fitness leader decided to expand their innovative club concept into a new market, selecting Edmonton, Alberta, as the city for their first Western facility.
The impressive 70,000-square-foot space, located in the community of Windermere, is equipped with the same upscale amenities and attention to detail members have come to expect from Movati. From the cardio area to the yoga studios, the technology we integrated not only supports but enhances every space within the facility.
The Audio
A superior sound system is an absolute must in a modern gym. Movati understands that the right audio solution can make or break your fitness experience, which is why it made up such a substantial portion of the overall installation.
More than one hundred Tannoy In-Ceiling Loudspeakers were installed within sixteen spaces throughout the facility, including in the cycling and yoga studios, pools, fitness floor and locker rooms. In the environments that rely heavily on music to complete the atmosphere, such as the various aerobic studios, Tannoy In-Ceiling Subwoofers were also integrated, providing more bass and enhanced sound quality.
In the cycling studio, powerful QSC 2 Way Trapezoidal Speakers with a 12 Inch Woofer were installed, providing a perfect solution for a high volume, distortion-free audio experience in this smaller space. The cycling studio also includes an instructor cockpit equipped with a Viewsonic Portable Touch Display, which offers handheld control over custom, pre-recorded light scenes that match the music and tempo in the space.
All audio is controlled using a centralized system for streamlined functionality and allows pre-selected background music to play within every space of the facility. Local inputs were installed in studios that require custom playlists and control, enabling Bluetooth to override whatever background music is playing for a pre-determined amount of time.

The Visual
Modern display technology has become a standard in most gym facilities, and with good reason. Not only can displays act as an entertainment tool for those working out, but they are also great for signage and directory purposes, in supporting security systems, and to display statics for members participating in performance tracking classes.
Twenty-three Samsung and LG LED displays were installed throughout the lobby and common area, daycare, change rooms, and fitness floors, each connected to a cable box mounted into the central rack room. Modulators, which are a great addition to any environment that circulates multiple channels over multiple displays, were also integrated, providing Movati with control of the dedicated lineup of channels available for viewing.
A 5000 Lumen Laser Projector paired with a Da-Lite Tensioned electric screen can be found in the cycling studio, and is used to display progress reports of the participating cyclists in real-time.
The Control
In a space as large as Movati, integrating the appropriate control and automation solution is crucial, and delivering a consistent member experience would be next to impossible without the necessary centralized system in place.
Each studio has its own Crestron touch panel to control local sources such as volume and program times. With the significant difference between the genre of music played during yoga, aerobic and cycling classes, the ability to independently manage music is a huge benefit for the class instructions. This intuitive control also alleviates any concern relating to audio interruption, as once a scheduled class finishes, any custom music defaults back to background music.
